Eyes On God

You look at your watch, it’s 12:57 a.m. you look back at your notes. You’re studying for a big test and then notice a light blink on your phone. Within seconds you are caught in the lure of social media, scrolling through facebook, double clicking pics on instagram, playing with filters on snapchat. This is a common thing that happens in life, nowadays, doctors claim we have a smaller attention span than before. The truth is, we do, in a fonstant world that is moving forward, we tend to become distracted by what’s around us. We become disinterested not just in our tasks but as well on people but more so, God.

One of the common things I have or continue to read in scripture is keeping our focus on him. It is easy to say that we love God but just as scripture describes in Colossians 3:1, to focus on the things that are above. There are many who claim to know God but just as the book of Matthew states, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. (Matthew 15:8). We are co stantly bombarded with things that may distract us from God. Not just such things as technology or even social media but also it may be a relationship. When something is placed before God it not only brings us away from God it can also turn to an idol in our lives if we are not careful. We need to be careful and just as scripture says, in everything we do, put God first (proverbs 3:6) and may it be to glorify God (Col. 3:17, 23) (1 Cor. 10:23-33).

One of the things I’ve found as of late is that a heart truly dedicated to God brings us closer to him and focused, in turn, we find him (Jer. 29:13). Though there are things that can distract us, as believers we are told to keep our eyes on Christ (Heb. 12:1-2). When we focus on him we do not fall prey to the works of the devil nor of the flesh but make sensible judgment (prov. 5:2). Within him we find peace, looking forward and not allowing our anxieties or fear take control, trusting God with all our hearts (Isaiah 26:3).

I’ve always heard that one needs to have an open mind, thus it is true but to an extent. To have an open mind means as well that you have to ultimately close it on an idea or belief that is solid as a rock, if not then it falters or can easily be shaken, broken. If you continuously have an “open” mind then you may fall to anything and that in itself is never good. Truth is never relative, what is true for you is not true for someone else, truth is absolute. Though there are different ways truth can be interpreted or seen, there is only one truth upon a subject. There can be different species of dogs, and you can say one dog is a dog but look at what makes a dog and we see that a cat can not be a dog. But what does this have to do with staying focused on God you may ask? When you believe or trust in God, your mind is set on him, your views change and you allow him to encompass your life. In doing so you surround your life in him and so your focus is drawn to God. We can hear people say that what we believe is false, but in Jesus we find the way, truth, and life.

For the way is narrow, to say the least, it has been a journey for me. I never truly let myself be used in the manner he is using me. From my experience, I used to be easily distract, from video games, to social media, to girls, and etc. Yet there’s been a passion for God that draws me closer than ever before. I long to be in his presence, to not only learn or abide in his word, but also to reach his people, serve not only him but the kingdom. And though the past may have left me scarred at times, I look forward and find rest, peace, in God. And so I tell you, keep focused on God, let all your worries be brough to him and may you be led by light, love, truth and peace. You can worry bout being single or even your problems but I say give it to God and find his timing and trust in him. When you don’t focus on him the world tries to weigh you down. Let not the gravity bring you down and become mastered by our flesh, the world, satan or sin, but let us be servants and slaves to Christ, our Lord and saviour. Be blessed.
